Plea Bargain
03:55
|
|||
It's startling how many fall
your drink is short but your order's tall
and stumbling across the hall
if I ask you please don't let me stall
please say yes, yes oh yes oh now
please say yes, yes oh yes oh now
please say yes, yes oh yes oh now
please say yes, yes oh yes oh yes
I'm on the right side, but I'm taking it wrong
I'm on the right track, but I'm taking too long
I'm on a treadmill, that old marathon
I keep my head up, but it comes crawling in
I keep my eyes shut, but I see everythin'
I think I missed out, and I don't know where to begin
I never thought I'd feel so proud
to wring excuses out like tow-ow-owls
and say the saddest things out loud
only to hear how dumb they sound
but you have ways to bring me down
(you've got bells and you've got hounds)
or turn my sorry life around
and get my story off the ground
you've already got it in the bag
don't lose the lot, for some old rag
it's nobody's fault, it's just a drag
to open the vault, and raise the flag

Trails
04:58
|
|||
I'm up on things, but you're up on me
and I've broken both my legs
set aside for eternity
on a nest of lonely eggs
the summer leads into dark alleys
like the mouth of something big
A gypsy curse and a pox on thee
for the mess that you have made
an excercise in cacophony
'til we barely knew you played
and history isn't company
but it keeps you in your place
a loving home where your time is free
at the bottom of a lake
But there are trails
and I'm trailing after you
those memories you never knew
left on some trailing afternoon
when voices trailed off too soon
but oh, I know - that you're not sane
and I'm too slow - to ever gain
any ground - at the rate
I'm going now, or the speed of sound
fell back dead on my horse's head
in another human race
the steering wheel at the foot of bed
isn't keeping up the chase
no ones body hears what you said
when you're drifting out to space
and someone's light isn't turning red
'til it hits him in the face
But there are trails
and I'm trailing after you
those memories you never knew
only just slightly still in view
left something old for something new
but oh, I know - that you're not sane
and I'm too slow - to ever gain
any ground - at the rate
I'm going now, or the speed of sound

congratulations
I'm really happy for you
you've turned a beautiful hue
congratulations
this is just what you needed
after all that you've been, put through
congratulations
I'm really happy for you
all of your dreams have come true
you've had such patience
I've got another side
but it's not worth my time
congratulations
I've tried, oh god I've tried
but I'm far past my prime
so congratulations
I'm really happy for you
this is just what you needed
I give up, I've conceded
this is just what you needed
after all that you've been, put through

Cardboard Box
02:43
|
|||
my dirty socks
are getting filthy
walked through the rain
I'm feeling guilty
my feet stink, around the clock
was it something I said
collapsed my bunk bed
and crushed my poor head flat
like a cardboard box
it's always something
walked through my pain
I feel it coming
it's too big
for me to block
okay, this time
your reasons rhyme
not gone awry
send back my spine
there's just one line
to now describe
I'm feeling fine-
ly ground, I fly
into the dust
but I'm always somewhere
I have to trust
that I can't always breathe this air
that life will only be unfair
that I'll be folded flat and square
like a cardboard box

Worth Keeping
04:34
|
|||
if there's something here worth keeping
it's not something that I've found
can I take you off this landslide
and set you back down on the ground
but if you're done little bo peeping
I guess I'll just be on my way
but if there's something here worth keeping
you just have to say
if there's something here worth holding
it must have burned out long ago
can I light up from your candle
and let the room fill up with smoke
but if your only joy is weeping
there's not much farther you can go
but if there's something here worth keeping
I hope you'll let me know
before I have to go
before I get too low
you left out the part where I just lose
I don't have the choice if can choose
I heard a lonely voice
I hope that this is just the booze
you left out the worst of all the news
I fell through the cracks in my own ruse
I had lonely thought
hoping that this won't leave a bruise
is there something here worth keeping

Mr. Radiator

mister radiator
you can't be s-serious
oh mister radiator
you can't be for real
mister radiator
you can't be s-serious
oh mister radiator
just what is the deal
and mister radiator
you've been going on off all night
oh mister radiator
don't you know how lazy I can be?
oh mister radiator
you've been going hot and cold all my life
oh mister radiator
you can't be for real
mister agitator
you've got me f-furious
oh mister tantalizer
get right out of here
mister tranquilizer
we used to be the best of friends
but mister tranquilizer
I think I'll steer clear
and mister radiator
you've been going on off all night
oh mister radiator
don't you know how lazy I can be?
oh mister radiator
you've been going hot and cold all my life
oh mister radiator
you can't be for real
extra, extra, read all about it
mister big decision is beginning to doubt it
he got drunk on evening, he screamed and he shouted
that his wild ambitions had finally sprouted
he was ranting, raving, all his visions were swarming
and he felt that something deep within him was forming
he kept happy thoughts and he ignored every warning
like he'd found his reason to wake up in the morning
first he felt sorry, then he felt sad
and illusion after illusion
turned up short or turned out bad
where is the glory that seemed so within my grasp
where is the glory...has it just passed?
and mister radiator
you've been going on off all night
oh mister radiator
don't you know how miserable I can get?
oh mister radiator
you've been going hot and cold all my life
oh mister radiator
you can't be for real

Old Dusty
04:44
|
|||
riding into town
you see the faces, and every one's a frown
and it just makes you want to say
oh, I hope that you all drown
we've walked for far too long
too many paces to sing a happy song
'cause I'm stuck here picking at my sores
oh and what was it all for?
you give me dirty looks
and you talk about me behind my back
this ain't one for the books
but it's not bad
listen to the sounds
the aching traffic, the footsteps on the ground
I think my headache grew a leg
something just cracked me like an egg
oh and take a look around
these people aren't your friends
everyone can hear you
but no one's listening anymore
it's just they've heard it all before
you give me dirty looks
and you talk about me behind my back
this ain't one for the books
but it's not bad
solo
you give me dirty looks
and you talk about me behind my back
this ain't one for the books
but it's not bad

Dumb Jokes
03:51
|
|||
dumb jokes
let's not consider other's feelings
I can't see farther than my ceiling
and my dumb jokes
reach farther out than that
cruel jokes
my thin protective coat is peeling
I never get away with stealing
and my cruel jokes
always boomerang on me
such a sick hoax
let's just forget this ever
conspired or fared the weather
I only ever laughed a bit
such a slick coax
who would have ever thought that
you'd fall for something so flat
it's really more your fault than mine
sad jokes
I tried so hard to make it worth while
I tried so hard to make the first mile
but my sad jokes
are too sad for me to see
they're too sad for me to see

Under Construction
02:30
|
|||
I'm still under construction
come back in a couple of years
they're still pouring the foundation
and grinding over my fears
It goes a little like this
I'm under maintenance
I don't know when I'll be done
they're tearing down my headaches one by one
It's a real production
but things are moving along
they're stripping out all the wiring
cause something must have been wrong
well I told all of the workers
to not hold back in the least
there's nothing here very useful
well nothing that isn't deceased
it goes a little like that
they're smoothing everything flat
letting in a little sun
they're tearing down excuses one by one
they're clearing out the cobwebs one by one

The Doors
06:20
|
|||
if I waste my life, can I have yours?
I'll sweep the deck and mend the sores
when the light goes out I'll lock the doors
on my own
was it sixty two or twenty five?
when I lost the keys to my beehive
and the last time I saw you alive
was so long
ago
I can't quite recall the date
light, turnin' around on me
as far as my eyes can see
all that's left to be is someone
who can't quite try to leave
or soak up what's left to breathe
as far as my chest can heave
as far as I know standing still here
is all part of the weave
so I've fallen onto my knees
and begged for a life of ease
all I want is a quiet death
from a terminal disease
as long as my brain will freeze
and wake up beneath the trees
and I can always count on something
to drift in with the breeze
one last atrophy, and I'm done, and I'm gone
one last irony, and I'm done, and I'm gone
one last symphony, and I'm done, and I'm gone
one last sympathy, and I'm done, and I'm gone
it was on TV and on the run
then it settled softly on the sun
but it wasn't fooling anyone
so I said
it's okay
it was never meant to speak the truth
